Meet the CROW Staff

Quality and committed staff are very important to the success of any organization, and in particular, CROW Here at CROW, our staff are 100% committed to the mission of CROW and the care and rehabilitation of our sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. They live and breathe CROW, many of them taking patients home with them in the evening. We appreciate them and hope that you will have an opportunity to meet some of them when you come to CROW for one of our public presentations.

Dr. PJ Deitschel, Clinic Director and Staff Veterinarian, has been a wildlife rehabilitator for 25 years, caring for over 50,000 wild animals representing more than 200 different species. She obtained her veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1996 and then served as CROW’s first Annual Veterinary Intern. After a year in South Africa learning about wildlife rehabilitation on the other side of the globe, PJ returned to CROW in 1998 to serve as the Staff Veterinarian. PJ is a graduate of the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and emphasizes the integration of western and eastern traditions in the treatment of CROW's patients.

Dr. Amber McNamara
Staff Veterinarian

Dr. Amber McNamara, Staff Veterinarian, is a native of Indiana. After working for several years as a veterinary assistant in small animal clinics in southern Indiana, she began veterinary school in 1999. Her first taste of CROW came when working as an extern in the summer of 2001. Following graduation from Purdue University in 2003, she returned as CROW’s Annual Veterinary Intern and was soon invited to join the staff.  Dr Amber is also a graduate of the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

 

 

Chastity "CAT" Turner, Senior Rehabilitator/Sea Turtle Technician, came to CROW as a volunteer in 2001 and then completed 4 consecutive Fellowships.  In 2003, she pounced on the available Sea Turtle Tech position. CAT’s experience as a Kennel Manager and Vet Tech, plus her diverse innate talents, make her an invaluable staff member.

Nikki Talianko, Rehabilitator, was first introduced to CROW as an Extern in 2002. She went on to complete several more externships while studying Zoology and Chemistry at Ohio Wesleyan University. Following her graduation in 2005, she returned to CROW as a Fellow.  It didn’t take long before Nikki was asked to become a staff member.

Jean Avre, PT Assistant Rehabilitator, relocated from Minnesota in 2000, to fulfill her dreams of working with animals. After dedicating her time to an exotic animal sanctuary and a no-kill animal shelter, Jean came to CROW in 2008 with much experience and passion. The rehabilitation and release of patients is what’s most rewarding to her.

Zachary Johnson, PT Assistant Rehabilitator, is currently a student at Florida Gulf Coast University and began working at CROW as a volunteer.

Carol Rothman, Development Assistant, initially joined CROW as a volunteer in 2001 upon moving from PA. Having visited Sanibel since 1968, Carol was familiar with CROW and made getting involved her first priority. With her expertise in PR, photography, desktop publishing and web design, Carol brings innumerable skills to the Development Department.

Eileen Pyatak, Clinic Office Manager, took an interest in CROW during her frequent Sanibel vacations. Upon retiring from NJ in 2004, she initially got involved as a part-time receptionist and volunteer. Eileen, a Rutgers graduate with an extensive business and accounting background, now assists in any capacity from clinic business to animal rescue.

Marguerite Jordan, Volunteer Coordinator, moved to Sanibel from Chicago in the late ‘70s and first joined CROW as a Development Assistant in 2007, then as a PT rehabilitator. With her extensive background in retail, PR, and HR, Marguerite is well suited for her new position: recruiting, scheduling and training CROW volunteers. 

Kevin “Joe” Stahl, General Maintenance, moved to Florida in 2005 from Indiana where he did everything from farming to construction. His diverse experience, along with his exceptional talents in creative woodworking and repairs, make Joe an invaluable staff member. He keeps the buildings and grounds in tip-top shape and he smiles as he does it.    

Beatrice “BZ” Coyne, PT Receptionist, moved to Sanibel in the mid ‘80s and operated  Tarpon Bay’s Concession in the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge for 15 years.  Upon starting a new life adventure in 2007, BZ wanted to stay involved with wildlife conservation. She’s was introduced to CROW on her first trip to the Island in the 1970s.

Susan Scott, PT Receptionist, came to SW Florida from Connecticut 43 years ago. Before joining CROW in 2007, Sue worked for the City of Cape Coral, started the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Program, and founded Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife and the Burrowing Owl Festival.  She’s also volunteered for many rescues over the years.

Tamara Collen, PT Receptionist, came to Florida from Argentina in 1982. A graduate of Barry University, she worked with pharmaceutical regulations in Miami before joining the San-Cap Chamber of Commerce.  With her passionate love of animals and her creative talents in graphics and design, Tamara also helps CROW in areas beyond patient reception.
