Environmental Stewardship

Environmental StewardshipUnsustainable development and thoughtless human actions constantly threaten the remarkable and diverse populations of our native wildlife. Something as simple as tossing garbage out a window can endanger delicate baby birds; something as thoughtless as speeding through habitat zones with a boat can injure unsuspecting marine animals. Whether its contaminated food and water sources, domestic pet attacks or reckless driving, careless and intentional human actions put birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles alike at risk.

As our human population continues to increase, the risks these animals face increase, as well. But, each of us can make a difference. By showing some respect and sharing our world with our wildlife neighbors, we can cut risk to animals and make a positive environmental impact.

Take an active role in reducing wildlife threats and injuries by following these guidelines:

Do:

  • Keep wild animals wild.
  • Educate children to respect wildlife
  • Know when and when not to rescue wildlife, especially during breeding season.
  • Keep dogs leashed.
  • Keep cats inside.
  • Clean bird feeders regularly.
  • Cultivate native wildlife-friendly gardens.
  • Pay attention when you prune. At the height of breeding season between April to November, use care when cutting back trees and shrubs, and mowing your grass.
  • Place caps on chimneys and screens vents when babies fledge.
  • Pick up litter that could harm wildlife.
  • Recycle whenever possible.

Do not:

  • Do not feed wildlife.
  • Do not leave fishing hooks and lines behind.
  • Do not leave bird netting on the ground.
  • Do not allow your domestic animals to run free.
  • Do not leave oil in pans.
  • Do not use chemicals for pest control and lawn care.
