Externship
for Veterinary Students
CROW,
a non-profit hospital providing care for
injured and orphaned wildlife on the Gulf
Coast of Southwest Florida, offers an externship
program for veterinary students. CROW
is a fully equipped wildlife hospital and
rehabilitation center located on Sanibel
Island that admits approximately 3400 patients
a year including 160 different species of
mammals, birds and reptiles. The extern
is supervised by a full-time staff veterinarian
and participates in most aspects of the
clinic’s work including feeding and
cleaning of patients, orphan hand-rearing,
patient handling, patient admittance and
diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, and necropsy.
Emphasis is placed on the student gaining
an understanding of the entire rehabilitation
process from admittance through release,
including the veterinarian’s role
in that process. Most patients spend the
majority of their rehabilitation time in
outside enclosures so the student can expect
to endure or enjoy southwest Florida weather
depending on the time of year.
Externships
are a minimum of four weeks in length and
shared housing will be provided.
Externship
for Natural Science Students
CROW,

an externship for natural science students and others interested
in wildlife rehabilitation. CROW is a fully equipped
wildlife hospital and rehabilitation center located on Sanibel
Island that admits approximately 3400 patients a year including
160 different species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The
extern is supervised by a full-time staff veterinarian and
participates in many aspects of the center’s work
including cleaning of compounds, diet preparation, orphan
hand-rearing, patient handling, wildlife rescues and releases.
Externs are invited to observe and participate in patient
admittances, diagnostics, surgeries and necropsies as available.
Most wildlife patients spend the majority of their rehabilitation
time in outside enclosures so the student can expect to
endure or enjoy southwest Florida weather depending on the
time of year.

Internship
for Graduate Veterinarians
CROW, a non-profit hospital providing care for injured
and orphaned wildlife on the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida,
offers a 1 year internship program in wildlife medicine
and rehabilitation. CROW is a fully equipped wildlife
clinic located on Sanibel Island along the Gulf Coast of
Florida. The hospital admits approximately 3400 patients
a year representing 160 different species of mammals, birds
and reptiles. The internship program is designed to enhance
clinical skills and introduce the intern to wildlife medicine
with an emphasis on wildlife rehabilitation. The intern
will be supervised by the full-time staff veterinarian and
participate in all aspects of clinical work including diagnostics,
medical treatment, radiology, anesthesia, surgery and necropsy.
The intern will also assist in teaching student externs.
Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent and should have
a strong interest in wildlife rehabilitation. On-island
housing will be provided in addition to a stipend and benefits.
A letter of intent, resume, veterinary school transcript,
three references, and a working interview will be required
for application. The position rotates every July 1.
Fellowship
CROW, a non-profit hospital providing
care for injured and orphaned wildlife on
the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida, offers
three 6 month positions for anyone interested
in wildlife rehabilitation and medicine.
“Fellows” are an integral part
of the clinic staff and participate in most
activities of the clinic operations. Each
Fellow acquires a thorough understanding
of the rehabilitation process and the daily
routine required to keep CROW running
efficiently. Promptness, positive attitude
and a willingness to work long hours are
a necessity. Fellows work closely with volunteers
and student externs so they must also possess
good communication skills.
Fellows
are provided with shared housing and a stipend
of $500 per month. Accepted applicants must
have the pre-exposure rabies vaccine prior
to beginning employment. Positions rotate
throughout the year.
