CROW Feathers: Jorge Luis Mercado

Where are you from?

"Mexico. I studied at Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM)."

What is your position at CROW?

"I am a Veterinary Medicine Externship Student."

How long have you worked at CROW?

"Almost 4 months! I started in early November and my externship ends in early March."

What is your favorite animal and why?

"Anhingas and Double Crested Cormorants. They remind me of another bird species that I worked with in 2018 and 2019, the Blue Footed Boobies."

What is your favorite memory or story from your time at CROW?

"The first time I had a chance to hold a Bald Eagle was amazing! I had it in my hands for about 45 minutes while the doctors were cleaning the wounds it had from a fight with another eagle. The best of all is that a few weeks after that, it got released!"

What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?

"I enjoy going out with my camera to take picture of birds! Also, I love going out to Ding Darling Refuge to run and bike. Once I was jogging in the morning and saw a really big otter in the middle of the road!"

What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?

"I love marine wildlife, so I’d love to pursue a Masters Degree focusing in shark populations ecology."
